The clean water, rocky riffles and variety of habitats of the Middle Fork support 57 different species of fish. Some are threatened or endangered, such as the bluebreast darter and river redhorse. Because of its biodiversity, the Middle Fork was cited by the Illinois Natural History Survey as the #1 river ecosystem in Illinois.
