Kickapoo State Park

This 2842-acre park was strip mined in the 1930's, bought for 10 cents/acre by local sportsmen and donated to the State. During the depression CCC barracks were built, and the National Park Service developed a restoration plan. The area has now revegetated completely around 30 deep ponds, which total 220 surface acres. The canoe livery serves both the ponds and the river (217 354 2060). Scuba diving is allowed in two lakes and ponds. Camping and picnicking are very popular: there are 3 picnic areas with tables, stoves and playground equipment, and 3 campgrounds that accommodate more than 200 tents and trailers, and one group campground that can be reserved. Access is from I-74 exit 206 and north a half mile on county road 850E, then east on 1880N into the park. Call park headquarters at 217 442 4915 for details.
