Middle Fork State Fish & Wildlife Area

This 2700-acre site lies on the west side of the river opposite Kennekuk County Park, and north of the Illinois Power Company land. County road 900E crosses the river at Higgensville bridge and several others dead-end into the area from the west: 2600N ends at Collision Marsh and Kinney Ford; 2350N at a parking area not far from Pondside Campground; and 2250N goes past the equestrian campground and ends at Bunker Hill canoe access. Besides camping, hunting and fishing, the area is used for many other activities. IDNR is re-establishing native vegetation in the 500-ft buffer strip along the Middle Fork River. The pre-settlement landscape was dominated by savannah habitat, characterized mostly by shortgrass (little bluestem) prairie with about one to ten oak trees per acre, and a few hazelnut thickets - ideal habitat for many species of game and nongame wildlife.
