This 144-acre site contains a variety of orchids that were first documented in the early 1970's by Dr. Charles Sheviak, now of the Harvard University Botanical Museum. They include the late coral root orchid, long bracted orchid, yellow lady's slipper orchid, and two types of ladies' tresses orchids: nodding and slender. Nearby seep springs support marsh marigold, spikemoss, and grass of Parnassus. Unfortunately the site is owned by Illinois Power Company, which during the 1970's built an ugly ash settling pond at the base of Orchid Hill. In the 1980's, however, the company dedicated the site as an Illinois Natural Heritage Landmark and signed a management agreement with IDNR. Visits may be arranged by calling the IDNR Natural Heritage Division at 217 345 2420.
