The Illinois DNR forbids swimming in all rivers and streams except in officially designated swimming areas. There is an official swimming area at Lake Mingo in Kennekuk County Park. Children sometimes find no-swimming rules hard to follow. Youngsters often seize the opportunity to delay the process of boarding or disembarking from watercraft, while older children learn to spot grapevines and distinguish them from poison ivy. The Committee on the Middle Fork has requested, unsuccessfully, that the rules on swimming be changed to allow people to swim at their own risk.
